Sharbat – The Girl with the Green Eyes, 2004
Roz E Murphy
Pencil Crayon

We all know this girl yet we’ve never met her. It is serendipitous when a photographer can capture such an intense moment with a camera and impact the Western World. This girl with no name tells a story with her eyes. She is a refugee who recently lost her whole family and watched her village destroyed. Originally, this drawing was meant to be an exercise in using pencil crayon. It had been awhile since I got to work with it in great depth and I wanted to make sure I could still use the medium. However, drawing a person’s face is more than simple portraiture, it is an intimate exploration of an individual. Sculpting this woman’s eyes was an amazing and challenging process. There’s more to eyes than a biological organ enabling us to see the world around us; eyes are a documentary of our identity. They are the gateway to the soul. Can you replicate the soul with a medium as feeble as pencil crayon? That’s like trying to understand God using Q-Tips.

I’m going to continue my practice using pencil crayon. It’s association with grade 7 geography is a stereotype that should be long from broken and artists should feel free to use it in their own artwork, it is an excellent medium.

That's absolutely fantastic. Very stunning, and after seeing that picture from National Geographics, I was mesmerized by her eyes. You captured her fire very well.

I like the way you did this piece, the way her hair had some green in it; the lighter tone and shadows; and those same piercing eyes depicted in her photo. You nailed this piece.

amazing, you've done just as well as the photographer did in capturing the emotion in that women's eyes. no matter how many times i see this picture it never ceases to capture my attention. by the way, i like your work with the pencil crayons, it gives the piece a softer look.
